PROJECT BRIEF
Project for the Enhancement of Ability on Maritime Safety and Security

OUTLINE OF THE PROJECT
Djibouti is a key maritime transport hub through which about 19,000 vessels pass each year, but it faces problems such as piracy, illegal activities including smuggling of people, illegal fishing, and trafficking, and maritime accidents involving refugees. Patrols of the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait are particularly important, but of the 35 vessels owned by the Djibouti Coast Guard, only two patrol boats could safely patrol the strait. This project provided the Coast Guard with two patrol boats about 35 m long, a floating pier, and ancillary facilities, aiming to strengthen its capacity to carry out search and rescue and maritime law enforcement quickly and appropriately, and to improve maritime safety in Djibouti's territorial waters.
