PROJECT BRIEF
Project for Improvement of Fishing Port in Lome

OUTLINE OF THE PROJECT
Togo, in West Africa, faces the Gulf of Guinea, and the fishing port in its capital, Lome, was the country's only port for artisanal fisheries, handling about 70% of marine fish landings. However, the port had to be reduced in size under the expansion plan of the adjacent Lome commercial port, and it was so congested that collisions and damage to fishing boats occurred frequently. In 2007, the government of Togo requested Japan's assistance in developing a fishing port. This project relocated the functions of the existing port and constructed a new fishing port, aiming to secure a place where artisanal fishers could continue their activities and to improve the safety, hygiene, and efficiency of fishing and fish distribution.
