PROJECT BRIEF

Project for Improvement in Fish Landing Facility and Fish Market of Youpwe in Douala City

Project for Improvement in Fish Landing Facility and Fish Market of Youpwe in Douala City
OUTLINE OF THE PROJECT

In Cameroon, demand for fish as an affordable source of animal protein is expected to grow, and a stable supply is needed. The Youpwe landing site in Douala, where about 15,000 tons of fish are landed each year and about 36,000 people work, is a key source of fresh fish for the country. However, the lack of landing facilities forced people to work in dangerous and inefficient conditions, and without a market, fish was traded on the street under the hot sun, leading to quality deterioration and losses. This project constructed a landing revetment, a fish market building, and an access road, aiming to improve the safety and efficiency of cargo handling and the quality of fish.
