Project for Capacity Development of the Fisheries sector for Promotion of Blue economy

OUTLINE OF THE PROJECT

Djibouti's harsh natural conditions and continuing droughts have left its agriculture and livestock sectors weak, and the country depends on imports for much of its food. Fish is a valuable source of protein that can be produced domestically, yet its potential remains largely untapped. In 2023, Djibouti adopted its National Blue Economy Strategy, which places fisheries alongside ports and tourism as a priority sector. In line with this strategy, this project works with public and private stakeholders in Djibouti City and Obock to improve fishing operations and co-management through fish aggregating devices (FADs), add value through hygienic handling and simple processing, and develop new markets, aiming to strengthen the capacity of the fisheries sector.
